Tribute: Soul Asylum's Karl Mueller

Categories: Music

I was sorry to hear that Soul Asylum bassist KarlMueller died of throat cancer on the eve of the band’s comeback attempt. (I’m listening to Grave Dancer’s Union as I write this.) I sawthem twice at the height of their fame  in the early ’90s, back when they’d already been together for 10years, when they could rock theaters and arenas with equal ferocity. By all accounts, he was a solid guy; in a 1998 online chat, he told fans his hobbies were ”hanging out with my wife, playing with my dog, fishing.” His Minneapolitan musician pals(scene vets like the Replacements’ Paul Westerberg and Husker Du’s Bob Mould) held a benefit concert for himlast fall, at a time when his cancer was in remission. He was due to have surgery on Friday, the day he died. Meanwhile, Soul Asylum has been shopping fora distribution deal for a album recorded last year, their first since 1998’s underrated Candy from a Stranger. Can someone step up so that we can hear this, please?
